Kabbalat Shabbat Service on Friday Evening, May 23, 2008
Each year this special Kabbalat
Shabbat service features musicians who join Rabbi Sokoll and
Cantor Welber on the bimah as they envelope us in beautiful Jewish
music.
This year, we are delighted that highly regarded musicians
Beth Bahia Cohen,
Glenn Dickson and David Sparr returned as an
encore to their wonderful 2007 performance. Beth Bahia Cohen is a
distinguished violinist on the music faculty of Tufts University and
has performed as a guest musician with the Klezmer Conservatory Band
for many years.
Glenn Dickson is the bandleader and clarinetist of
the Boston based klezmer band, Shirim, and David Sparr is a
keyboardist and the music director at Temple Ohabei Shalom in
Brookline.

Have you ever heard the
phrase "The joint was jumping"? Well, if you were lucky enough
to be at Friday night services at Temple B'nai Israel on May
23rd, you know what I'm talking about. This was our "Annual
Musical
Shabbat". And it was like nothing that has gone before.
As noted in President Jane
Wiseman's column in the Temple newsletter, the evening was
sponsored this year by Alan and Terri Chebot and their sons,
Daniel, Jesse and Ben, in memory of their beloved father and
grandfather, Cantor Paul L. Chebot, who served Temple B'nai
Israel for over 40 years.
Music is an important and
integral part of our lives. Some of us play instruments, others
sing but certainly everyone enjoys music in the many forms that
are available to us.
Cantor Lois Welber and the
trio she introduced to us were not only dynamic, they were
phenomenal. They brought a depth of feelings and spirituality of
a by-gone era (yet timely for today) that stirred our souls to
joy and to sacred heights.
Their beautiful
arrangements and the richness of their tone and sound were sure
to please the most discriminating ear while pulling on the
strings of our Jewish hearts. Their truly inspired music was
both contemporary as well as traditional. |

Dancing started earlier
than in past years as the music motivated Rabbi Sokoll and,
subsequently, a large number of attendees to leave their seats
in a lively dance encircling the sanctuary. It was truly a time
to dance -- not only once as in past years, but twice. This, if
nothing else, tells you how phenomenal the evening was.
The evening was truly a blend of beautiful
Shabbat services and spiritual music as well as being something
creative and sensational. The contrast between the subdued and
the passionate parts of the service was unique.

Purim Spiel 5768, TBI’s March 23, 2008 festive
fundraiser for Temple Ahavat Achim of Gloucester was a great
success. The appreciative audience laughed, sang, shook their
greggors and enjoyed a delicious breakfast prepared and served
by Risa Bunick, Debby Cherry, Isabelle Guttell, Sue Huberman,
Janet Lamkin, Ruth Maibor and Terry O’Connor. Several TBI
members who could not attend sent donations. The generosity of
our members, friends and extended family allows us to present
Temple Ahavat Achim with a check for $750. Thank you to the cast
for an outstanding performance and to everyone for your vital
role in the larger Jewish community’s efforts to assist Temple
Ahavat Achim in their time of rebuilding. Your contributions
made it all possible.
